Cold weather puts heavy demands on the battery at a time when it is least efficient. For example, at zero degrees Fahrenheit, a battery is less than half as efficient as at 80 degrees. Batteries should be kept clean, free of corrosion, filled to the proper water level, and properly charged. A poorly charged battery will freeze, says Smith. Keep electrical connections tight for best results. Spark plugs and breaker points need periodic cleaning, adjusting and replacement for efficient engine operation.
