In talking with a farmer recently, he indicated a lack of interest in budgeting feed to his livestock; said he would feed what he had anyway so what was the use of figuring out livestock nutritional needs and allowing them just enough to meet those needs. Of course it all depends on why the man is farming and what his wants are. If the farmer, however, is interested in making a profit, he will pay close attention to his livestock feed allowance as this item amounts to 50^-80% of total production costs. Before getting in full swing of the winter feeding chore a farmer should get a forage analysis on his hays and on his ensilage after the silo has been opened. Core borings from 12-15 bales of hay selected at random from each cutting and each type of hay should best be taken as normally there is a lot of difference, for example, between Alfalfa and orchard grass hay. The same applies to ensilage; even a great deal of difference is found in corn ensilages. Analysis results of your forages produced in 1964 should not necessarily be the same as the ensilage produced this year. Seasons, varieties, stage of maturity all influence digestible protein and total digestible nutrient of a feed. Remember the “reins" controlling production costs are in your hands.
