and heifers increased to$5.79 per hundred, the greatest price difference in the history of Virginia Feeder Calf Sales. For the past 10 years, the difference has averaged $4.65 per hundred. There has bee n much discussion about the price spread between grades of calves in recent years, says Williamson. There are instances in which pens of the lower grade calves have brought as much as the higher grades. This past fall, however, choice calves averaged $1.15 per hundred higher than calves grading good, and the good calves out-sold the mediums by $2.25 per hundred. This is about par for the past five years. Ten years ago, the average was around $2 per 'hundred between choice and good, and about the same between good and medium.
Williamson adds, "Today cattle feeders are marketing a smaller percentage of higf choice and prime grade slaughter cattle than 10 years ago, and this has probablj taken a little edge off the price advantage of the choice
