The State Highway Department--faced with rapidly increasing interstate and arterial highway mileage--is stepping up its defenses for its annual battle with ice and snow. To'provide faster, more effective road clearance during winter storms, the Department's maintenance division is adding to its basic arsenal about 14,000 tons of chemicals, a comparable tonnage of abrasives, more than 75 new storage facilities, about 180 more snow plows and chemical spreaders, and some 65 Department trucks.
