State Latin Tour’ment

Philip Byrd Eastham,' son of Mr. and Mrs. Philip B. Eastham of Hume placed second in the state in Latin II in the state wide Latin tournament held recently. The Fauquier High School student earned a score of 94.3, a half-point behind the winner. He was com peting with 239 students. Byrd also won honorable men tion in a Latin creative writing contest with his story Piscis Aeneus (The Bronze Fish). Last year he won first prize in this contest. Mrs. Pauline Bruce of Washington is Fauquier High’s Latin instructor. Fauquier’s nine contestants brought back one second, one third and two honorable mention certificates from the tournament sponsored by the Classical Association of Virginia. Byrd Eastham is the grandson of Mrs. E. M. Eastham of Flint Hill.
