Probably the greatest asset in learning that any student can have is the ability to read well. Likewise, defficulties in this area can be a student’s greatest hinderance in all areas of learning. This is a problem being realized, not only at Rappahannock County schools, but schools all over. And that is why the new reading lab which has been constructed at R. C. H. S. is such an important and welcomed addition to our school.
A fulltime teacher who specializes in this type of high intensity reading program is being sought now to instruct the reading program and aid students who may have difficulty in this area. Students will become a part of the program through special parental permission and will be instructed at various times during their English classes only in groups of six or ten at a time. It is important to realize that this program is not for special ed students but for basically average students who may simply have difficulties in reading.
In addition to this, Mrs. Moffett, as librarian, recently recieved a federal title n library fund. After discussion and planning with members of the R. C. H. S administration it was decided that this money would be used for the purchase of reading materials. The money was equally divided among our R. C. H. S English teachers and then used for the reading materials each felt would most benefit the student body. Our new reacting lab is the beginning of a better future in learning for many R. C. H. S. students. It’s a great beginning to see realized.
