Legislation that would permit Virginia Agricultural Districts based on the New York state law has been carried over for further study until the 1977 General Assembly. House Bill 949 had nine patrons, with the chief patron Delegate Arthur Giesen from Staunton. The bill will be studied between sessions with a series of public hearings to be held.
The New York law allows for agricultural districts of a minimum of 500 acres to be set up after petitioning the local government. The agriculture district will stay in effect for a period of eight years at which time it is subject to review by both the governing body and the landowners. The district could then be extended for another eight year period. □
