CONGRESSMAN J. Kenneth Robinson believes a compromise proposal presented to a Senate subcommittee by Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr., “may prove to be a broadly acceptable basis for a wilderness area designation in Shenandoah National Park.”
“Retention of certain fire roads and popular hiking and horseback trails as corridors to receive a higher order of maintenance than permitted in pure wilderness paths, as suggested by Senator Byrd, would permit most present’ uses of the wilderness areas to continue and provide for ready access by ranger patrols and fire and rescue teams,” Robinson said.
