John Jones, Executive Director of the Virginia State Sheriffs Association, said in a telephone interview this week that he didn’t think recent pronouncements by the State Compensation Board would have “any impact on the law enforcement policies of county Sheriffs Departments.”
Jones said the letter received by Rappahannock Sheriff W. A. Buntin from Compensation Board Executive Secretary John Rasnick was primarily a lesson in filling out mileage forms and did not signal a change in mileage reimbursement policy.
The letter and copies of an accompanying Compensation Board audit report were supplied the Supervisors by Sheriff Buntin in time for last week’s Board meeting. (See separate story). Commonwealth Attorney George Davis interpreted the letter and report as signaling an end to controversial policing procedures followed by Buntin and his deputies.
