heavy cuttings which are necessary for even-aged management. There are a number of practices that can lessen the visual impact of logging: (1) A selective cutting or thinning can be implemented, sometimes at the expense of optimum productivity of the stand. (Can we afford this compromise?) (2) Logging can be limited to small blocks, staggered over a large area and separated by uncut areas. (3) Clearcut areas can be shaped to follow contours and more or less blend in with the lay of the land. (4) Buffer strips near houses and roads, etc. can be left uncut to hide the cutover area from view.
These practices are frequently applied to government and industrial timberlands. They are rarely applicable to private lands, especially on a small scale.
