Bookmakers would give mighty slim odds on 11 orphan puppies only a week old hanging on to life. But anyone who bet on Tigger and Rue’s babies would have broken the bank! The odds makers couldn’t have reckoned with a town as adoptive parent.
Charlie and Ellen Manson were taken by surprise when their flat-coated retriever, a birthday present for Charlie a year earlier, gave birth to 11 puppies. They had bought Rue to keep their male dog, Tigger, company and to give them a supply of little Tiggers but they hadn’t expected quite so many tiny bundles of black fur.
Despite the awesome number of offspring, Rue took her job seriously. Eight days later, all the babies were healthy and well fed and their future looked great.
But tragedy hit the Manson home. Rue got into a pond with cement walls and couldn't climb out. She drowned, leaving 11 orphans and two distraught masters.
