Half of Rappahannock's delegation favored former Fairfax Supervisor Rufus Phillips, the candidate backed by the American Agriculture Movement (AAM), for the first two ballots. Rufus Phillips was Miller’s third closest challenger, after DuVal and Norfolk City Council member G. Conoly Phillips. Rappahannock split the delegation’s four votes two for Miller and two for Rufus Phillips on the First two ballots. All four voted for Miller on the third ballot.
They received no instructions after their election at the mass meeting held April 15 at the courthouse in Washington. All said they were uncommitted.
“He’s gained steadily, and he ought to take it,’’ predicted Gilkey before the “open convention coalition” stepped out of Miller’s way on the crucial ballot.
Mrs. Schaeffer said the direction Miller's campaign will take in Rappahannock probably will be mapped this Thursday at the next quarterly meeting of the county Democratic Committee.
