By R OS ANNE BERKENSTOCK Melanie Smith captured her second Upperville Jumper Gassic in three years when she-rode Stillmeadow Farm’s Val de Loire to outclass 20 other horses Sunday in the jumper ring at Mrs. A. C. Randolph’s Salem Farm. The jumper classic concluded the week long Upperville Colt and Horse Show held last week at Grafton Farm across the road from Salem.
Several thousand spectators crowded on the hillside overlooking the colorful course or gathered in box seats along the ring. Among the entries were six horses from Mexico who came to the classic at the beinning of their summer show tour.
The course, designed by Robert Jolicoeur of Canada, contained 15 fences ranging from spreads and verticals to a water jump and Liverpool, and three in-and-outs. Fence 14, a vertical, was particularly tricky because it closely followed the wide water jump and gave riders little time to collect their horses before jumping again.
