Priority
To the editor: Why i* $3000 considered too much for a third deputy? To the residents of Rappahannock County, this should be a top priority in their 1978-79 budget. Surely the security of having a wellmanned and effective law enforcement department is worth more to us than this! Our Board of Supervisors must open their eyes and ears and approve Sheriff Buntin’s request before we lose the deputies we do have. The simple fact that our Board of Supervisors has denied this request for the third consecutive year is clear that they feel our law enforcement department to be of minor concern. This is not good. All of us deserve and should demand as much protection as we can afford, and with a population of over 5000, not only can we well afford it, we definitely need it!
In our opinion it takes dedicated souls to work in the conditions and for the salary described by Rev. Hobson and Mr. Moore in their letters of last week’s edition. Let’s not take advantage of our deputies' dedication to this county. We might not be so lucky to find others so willing to work so hard.
As a closing thought in addition to the employment of a third deputy, we would like to recommend a salary increase for these deputies as their present salaries are disgracefully low for the amount of time and energy they spend on the job Not only would this increase encourage continued employment, but should we ever need to fill future vacancies, we can be guaranteed of more than three applicants as has been the case in the past.
