Miss Neel noted that two letters regarding the reading program had been sent out from school to the parents of the 350 elementary students who are a year or more below grade level in reading. If the forms were not returned marked by the parents, then teachers were requested to call the homes, according to Miss Neel.
“The response seems to warrant not going ahead,” said Ron Wiley, adding that the program had been put together “awfully suddenly.” “It is the regret of the School Board that there is not more participation,” Chairman Beverly Massie responded. She recalled that parents had shown up in force for previous Schuq^ Board meetings and indicated interest in attacking the reading problems that Rappahannock’s elementary students have shown. “I don’t know why more failed to participate (in the reading program),” she added.
