Cost $4 Million
The results of a recent survey conducted by the Virginia Divison of Litter Control indicates the state’s local governments spent an estimated S3.9 million during fiscal year 1977 for local litter pickup.
The single largest expenditure was in the City of Norfolk where $585,000 was spent for motor sweeping and hand sweeping operations along streets and other public areas in an effort to keep these areas litter free.
Norfolk was followed by Henrico County which spent $340,000 and the City of Hopewell which expended $232,447.
The survey letter asked the state's 136 county and city administrators to submit the actual or best estimated cost for litter pickup in their respective localities.
