At the end of the first round, Smith on Val de Loire, Bernie Traurig on The Cardinal, Lynne Little on Port, and Steve Stephens on Gray Chief all had successfully negotiated the challenging course. They returned for a jump off over a shortened course.
Val de Loire, The Cardinal, and Port again went clean while the four faults incurred for a knockdown by Grey Chief placed him in fourth position. Val de Loire’s time of 43.50 bested The Cardinal’s 44.53 so the Stillmeadow Farm gelding received the blue ribbon and the $4500 first prize. Third went to Port with a time of 46.42.
Smith first won the jumper classic in 1976 on Radnor II, a horse that she also competed with on Sunday. He ended up in an eight-way tie for fifth place with four faults from the first round.
Smith, 28, said that although she was raised on a farm and grew up in Pony Club, she did not receive formal riding instruction until she was 19. She overcame discouragement from one of the foremost trainers and instructors, and climbed her way to success by hard work grooming, braiding, and whatever else needed doing around the barn.
