After a discussion on. first, the relative merits of different car models and second, whether carry-over funds from the summer reading program should be used for vehicle purchase, the Board voted to limit funds to the amount in the budget plus the revenue from the surplus sale with the choice of an automobile left to the discretion of the superintendent. Board member Walter Masterson voted against the motion and Alan Stokes abstained.
Bloomer justified purchase of a new car on the basis of condition and mileage of current fleet vehicles. According to the superintendent, the seven vehicle tleet consists of:
—A 1%5 brown Ford with 124,000 miles assigned to McDaniel. The car was obtained from the Warren County school system when that division split from Rappahannock. No money was exchanged in the transaction.
