But after allocating money to upgrade the service fleet, the question of what type of vehicle to buy was left up in the air when Bloomer reported that the pick-up truck could no longer be used to transport lunch program commodities from Manassas. Bloomer told the Board that he'd received a letter from John Nelson in the Stale Department of Agriculture stating that commodities must be protected by a cover from sun, heat and rain. According to Bloomer, Nelson refused to detail any guidelines on what type of vehicle should be used except to recommend a van.
Noting that the Board had just passed a motion authorizing $4,576.90 to upgrade the school's vehicle fleet. Mrs. Massie said that Bloomer had the perogative of purchasing a van if he felt this was what the school system needed most. A second option, she said, would be to haul commodities from Manassas in the trunks of two sedans.
