Emotional Issue
Luke emphasized that the question of what is to be built must be addressed rationally—not emotionally. Data used in reaching a decision on space needs at the high school should be accurate enough to pass the “drop dead test,” he said. “If all of us were to drop dead, some other group could come in, pick up and reach the same conclusions. Emotions have nothing to do with this,” Luke maintained.
Figures on projected enrollment are particularly necessary, Luke continued. “Are the schools growing or are they not growing?” he asked, noting that different surveys indicated different enrollment trends. “I tend to think they’re growing but we need numbers to prove it,” he said.
He reported that 10 cents on the tax rate per S100 of assessed value generated $1,500 in revenue. Funding a $750,000 expansion project this year would add 40 to 50 cents on the proposed 197980 tax rate of $4.20, Luke noted.
