which thousands and thousands of nursing steer calves in Virginia should be implanted with Ralgro. If a producer can add IS to 25 pounds by implanting with Ralgro in July, it will certainly be a' paying proposition. We are not recommending heifer calves be implanted unless the producer knows for sure that heifer calves so implanted will be fed out and slaughtered.
Control Flies Use backrubbers or dust bags placed at critical locations which cattle will use daily for cheapest and best fly control. If dust bags are used, be sure they are placed low, about 18 to 24 inches from the ground. Be sure dust bags and backrubbers stay charged so they will get the necessary insecticide on the cattle.
Treat Pinkeye - I wish there was an easy solution to the prevention of pinkeye but there is apparently no one best system. Keeping pastures clipped, providing adequate shade, and other such measures are very helpful. The best treatment appears to be getting the job done early when pinkeye is first noticed. Using an injection of a mixture of antibiotics and cortisone in the eyelid or the eye conjunctiva and putting a shut-eye patch on, appears to be the best treatment.
Provide ample salt and minerals at all times.
