Candidates
There were no surprises on the final filing day for the November local elections. Everyone who turned in the required petitions to county Clerk Diane Bruce had previously announced their intention to run.
Nineteen candidates will be vying for positions as Supervisor. Sheriff. Commissioner of the Revenue and Commonwealth's Attorney.
In the race for the Board of Supervisors, current chairman E. P. Luke will face Cecil Baldwin for the seat from Piedmont District. In Wakefield District, Hubert Gilkey will oppose incumbent Edwin "Butch” Eastham and in Stonewall-Hawthorne, incumbent H. B. Wood will be challenged by Sean Kilpatrick. Ellen Manson will run against incumbent Clarence Baldwin in Hampton District and Jack Atkins will try to unseat incumbent Dick Latham in Jackson District.
Local lawyers Douglas Baumgardner and Peter Luke will vie for the position of Commonwealth's Attorney. Incumbent George Davis will not seek re-election.
In the race for Sheriff, incumbent W. A. Buntin will face former Sheriff John Walker Jenkins and Edwin Corbin. There will also be a three-way contest for Commissioner of the Revenue between Deputy Commissioner Merle Scoggin. Marilyn Bailey and Ruth Grimsley. Incumbent Virginia Smith will not be a candidate.
Incumbent Treasurer Frances Foster is the only local candidate running unopposed in the November elections.
