Attorney General Marshall Coleman defends Virginia’s new bingo law as a legitimate effort by the state to regulate a gambling activity and put restrictions on bingo hall profiteers. Coleman asked the federal court last month to dismiss a constitutional challenge to the state's new bingo law on the grounds that the state has the authority to strictly, regulate bingo as a gambling ■ activity.
“Gambling-related activity is not a fundamental personal right,” Coleman noted in a 12-page brief filed in US District Court in Richmond.
“The purpose of Virginia’s bingo law is to prevent the professionalization of the game and to keep bingo in the hands of charities for their benefit,” Coleman said when filing the brief. “The law is designed to prevent profiteering or intrusion by organized crime.”
