He suggested instead that new personnel be screened for TB upon employment with the rest of the school staff tested every five years. If this procedure is followed, he said, "we feel no hazard exists.” In addition, he proposed that any teacher absent from school due to illness for two weeks or more be required to provide a medical certificate before returning. “It’s always seemed an oddity to me that teachers are tested (for TB) to protect the children but nobody demands that the children be tested to protect the teachers,” LeGarde said. "That’s always seemed illogical to me.”
The board agreed to accept LeGarde's suggestions with a formal vote on the new policy to come at the July meeting.
Lynne Baines, seventh grade science teacher and incoming president of the Rappahannock County Education Association, presented the board with a resolution from the RCEA. The resolution states that the Association looks forward in the coming school year to the School Board making significant progress through (1) providing positive leadership to further the cause of education (2) providing adequately for the educational needs of the county’s children, including support of capital outlay programs, (3) adequately providing for the economic and professional needs of professional employees and (4) providing meaningful and
