Seventh District Congressman J. Kenneth Robinson has written to Secretary of Labor Ray Marshall urging that the Department this year “give more realistic consideration” to the needs of Virginia fruit growers for an adequate number of qualified harvest workers. Robinson urged Marshall to “take a personal interrest in insuring that the responsible offices of the Department move expeditiously to deal with job orders submitted through normal channels by fruit 'growers of Virginia in connection with planning for the 1979 apple harvest.” “I am sure that the growers, individually and through their regional organizations, stand ready to provide the Department with all needed supporting information, in order that the necessary determinations can be made well in advance of the commencement of harvest,” Robinson told Marshall.
In making public his letter to the Secretary, Robinson noted that, “There should not be a repetition of the delays, and last-minute confusion, which the Department of Labor has visited on the growers in recent years, causing them severe economic damage.
‘‘In particular, the disgraceful fiasco of Iasi year’s federal dumping ol bewildered, unqualified Puerto Rican workers intc the orchards, at heavy cost tc the taxpayers, must b< avoided.”
