Higher fuel prices and hard-to-get gasoline appear to be affecting travel to Shenandoah National Park. Visits for May 1979 are down by 12.5 percent compared to May 1978, dropping from 180,600 to 158,000.
For Calendar Year 1979 compared with Calendar 1978, the decrease is 4 percent.
Overnight stays in May have also decreased from 97,908 in 1978 to 94,633 in 1979.
Readings taken at Big Meadows Weather Station show the maximum temperature for May as 75 degrees and the minimum as 31 degrees. Precipitation for the month totalled 3.77 inches.
