and coordinate the new inspection program, he explained. Melnikoff also noted that PBM will initially sign a contract for only six months.
Under the terms outlined, the $500 contract fee will ensure a building inspector is available three days per week, cover the cost of inspection forms and provide 'for two evening seminars to explain details of the program to contractors and interested citizens.
“That will help to ease a lot of tension,” remarked supervisor Clarence Baldwin. “People in the county don’t understand what an inspection entails but want to be educated,” he said.
"We’d be guaranteed a man three days a week?” asked supervisor Dick Latham.
“Or as often as you want,” Melnikoff replied. The six months contract gives the county flexibility, he maintained. If economic conditions result in a slowdown of construction, then the contract can be renegotiated to guarantee an inspector one or two days a week. If construction picks up, then an inspector can be supplied five days per week, Melnikoff explained. The local building official will take permit applications and schedule inspection visits, he continued. This local official will be more of an administrator and will coordinate work, Melnikoff said, noting that the person filling the job would not need the same technical experience
