Complaints about a dance held last weekend at the Washington Community Center have moved the supervisors to consider enacting a “dance hall ordinance” aimed at controlling disturbances from public gatherings.
At Monday’s work session held by the Rappahannock Supervisors, Chairman E. P. Luke reported that Sheriff W. A. Buntin had received a call at home Sunday morning at 2:45 a.m., complaining about noise from a dance at the community center on Fodderstack Road. The person also telephoned Luke at 7 a.m. the same morning and called supervisor Clarence Baldwin, too, Luke said.
“No member of the board of supervisors has the authority to send the sheriff anywhere,” Luke emphasized, adding that this wasn’t the first time he’d been called with a request to interfere in law enforcement duties.
Under enabling legislation passed by the General Assembly, the county can pass *jdance hall ordinance prohibiting noise that will disturb neighbors, Commonwealth’s Attorney Douglas Baumgardner told the supervisors.
