The only alternative method of School Board selection is far more democratic: the County Board of Supervisors appoints the School Board members. A petition requesting this must be signed by fifteen percent of the number of voters who voted in the last presidential election and presented to the Circuit Judge who schedules an election. We need less than one hundred more signatures to meet this requirement. Will your sign the request for a referendum? The rescue squad in Rappahannock work hard to serve the people of the county and it is a continual struggle to do so.
The Emergency Medical Services Council of Planning District Nine was formed to assist the rescue squads in the five counties in doing their jobs. This EMS Council is a locally controlled group funded by federal dollars and now President Carter has, recommended that the program be ended as of July 1.
While all programs must expect to share in the present budget austerity, the complete removal of a program > that can so directly affect people’s lives should not be expected, especially when it is funded by such a small amount of money in relation to the budget cuts that are being called for.
If the people of the county want to support their rescue squads, then they should write their representatives in Congress, J. Kenneth Robinson and Senators John Warner and Harry F. Byrd, requesting that they work to “please save at least part of the Emergency Medical Services Program”, Public Law 96-142.
This is important and must be done immediately if it is to help.
