Court Order First
Charles Eld red proposed that the board purchase only one replacement bus for 1980-81 and use the balance in the basic category to buy a specially equipped vehicle for special education transportation, mandated by law.
Masterson countered that there weren’t enough handicapped students to justify the expense and maintained that the board should wait to purchase a special vehicle until ordered to do so by the court.
Despite the opposition, Eldred moved that the bus and handicapped vehicle be purchased with the allocated $41,000 included in the basic budget. When there was no second, Mrs. Massie yielded the chair to vice-chairman Walter Masterson and seconded the motion herself. The motion was defeated with Eastham, Masterson and Allen Stokes opposed.
A second motion to allocate only $20,500 for replacement of one bus passed with Eldred opposed and Massie abstaining from the vote.
