"But we don't have a town sargeant or town police to enforce it,” interjected councilwoman Dorothy Hawkins. She added, however, that she felt all the recent changes in town make a leash law necessary.
"The dog problem is nothing new.” Miller replied. "You and your all-ladies slate ran on a platform of getting the dogs off the street," he recalled in reference to town elections 30 years ago.
Mrs. Burke asked where responsibility - lie* for damages should a dog running loose injure someone.
"The owner of the dog,” Miller replied.
“If the owner of the dog’s not worth anything, you’re not going to get anything" said Mrs. Burke. She emphasized that she had nothing against dogs. "I think people should have dogs but they should keep them from bothering others."
The council agreed to check the town’s old ordinances to see if the existing regulations included a leash law.
“If we can’t find one, we should pass one,” stated councilman Charlie Jenkins.

Physicals
Rappahannock County High School athletic physicals will be held at the high school on Thursday, July 31. Girls physicals are scheduled to begin at 9:00 and boys at 1:00. There will be no make-up date for these physicals.
