was the easy victor in
Rappahannock's Democratic primary election to select a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Virginia. Rawlings tallied 45 votes to 25 for Du Val and 24 for Colvin. James Leake was installed as president of the Rappahannock Jaycees, receiving the gavel from outgoing president, Netus (Sonny) Brown. Capt. L. B. Stuart was honored on his 70th birthday with a dinner given by Mrs. Stuart in their home in Amiss ville. Cadet Douglas K. Baumgardner of Washington was named to the Dean’s List at Virginia Military Institute with a 3.5 grade point average. Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Cordani of Amiss ville celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary with a party given by their children. The U.S. Office of Education predicted that 140 young men and women from * Rappahannock will attend college in 1970 at a total cost to local families of $360,000. Average outlay for one year at Virginia state colleges was estimated at $1,250 for tuition, fees, room and board with the average cost at private colleges estimated at $2,720 per academic year.

THE STATE POLICE conducted
a raid in the
Castleton area, confiscating approximately 200 marijuana plants along with numerous other illegal drugs and paraphernalia. Peter Stone was arrested and charged with possession of controlled drugs.
Rappahannock’s extension homemakers were busy creating needlepoint squares for a bicentennial tapestry to be displayed in the governor’s mansion in Richmond.
The Rappahannock Retired Teachers’ Association held a special luncheon meeting at the home of Mrs. Frances Lyne in honor of Miss Elsie Dodson and Mrs. Pauline Bruce.
Herbert Foster of Flint Hill was honored on his 70th birthday with a picnic and was presented with a silver pitcher from his friends in Flint Hill.
