Rappahannock Co. Elementary School Students Tara Fisher, Jim Dennis, John Flood and Nancy Elizabeth Proctor will each attend sessions of the University of Va. Summer Enrichment Program for gifted children and youth.
The Program sponsored by the School of Education at the University for children in grades 5-8, will enable students to pursue areas of study designed to develop critical thinking skills.
Participants will select subjects in which they are particularly interested through seminar and individual study, as well as a variety of extracurricular activities. Individual attention will be provided by low teacher-pupil ratios of less than one to seven.
Those taking part in the program will live in University housing under counselor supervision.
The curriculum, oriented toward either the humanities or sciences, will place particular emphasis upon the problems and possibilities of the future.
Participation in projects dealing with art, music, literature. history, psychology, sociology, political science and architecture will be encouraged as students benefit from the guidance provided by university faculty members with expertise in these areas. The program is open to children in grades four through seven attending either private or public school through nomination and application by school personnel and parents. Students are accepted on the basis of aptitude test scores, achievement test scores, creative expression and an indication of a high level of motivation. r
