Bike Safety
Fran Eldred pointed out that youngsters riding bicycles on the parking lots bordering Washington Square are creating a safety hazard with traffic at the intersection. In addition, she noted, children ride around town on the sidewalks, darting out into the street at corners. “Somebody's kid is going to be wiped out,” she warned.
According to Eldred. a state law prohibits riding bicycles on sidewalks. She added that sheriff W. A. Buntin has used this regulation in the past to encourage children to stop but said he felt that a town ordinance would be a better tool.
Since the state already has a law prohibiting bike riding on sidewalks. Miller responded, the town doesn’t need its ow n ordinance.
Town Plan
There were no comments from either the audience of four or the council members during the public hearing on Washington’s First comprehensive plan, developed over the past year along with the county plan by the Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission.
Mayor Miller reported that a recent decision by the Virginia Supreme Court upholding Loudoun County's denial of the Windmill shopping center rezoning has put more emphasis on the comprehensive plan. Miller said he’d checked with John Capelle. executive director of the Rappahannock-Rapidan
