of six mayors from American towns named Washington who were guests of the National Capital Sesquicentennial Commission in Washington, D.C. A black mountain rattlesnake was on display at the Moore and Payne Motors at Washington. Found in a blackberry patch on the Ernest Smoot farm in Harris Hollow by Loring Anderson, the snake measured approximately 2V£ feet in length and four inches around and had six rattles. James A. Estes celebrated his 87th birthday with a picnic given in his honor by the Methodist Sunday School of S perry ville. Mrs. Ashby Jenkins was recovering at her home in Nethers Mill after being bitten on the ankle by a snake while in her garden. The wake, thought to have been a copperhead, was hidden among berry bushes growing near the garden fence where Mrs. Jenkins stopped to pick off a few blackberries.

County Historical

Society held its first meeting after being incorporated by the State Corporation Commission. Officers elected were E. M. Jones, president; Mrs. Mary Botts Quaintance, vice-president; Robert L. Brown, treasurer; Mrs. John S. Browning, secretary and William M. Carrigan, coordinator.

Castleton Farms, one of Rappahannock’s most beautiful and distinguished estates, was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Homer E. Henry of Falls Church.

The newly located post office at Flint Hill was dedicated at ceremonies opened with a short talk by the postmaster, Mrs. Barbara Gentry. The Rev. James B. Grimmer, pastor of Flint Hill Methodist Church, gave the invocation, followed by a welcome from H. S. Barksdale, president of the fire company.

Rappahannock Republicans met at the courthouse to hear Mr. I. R. Dovel of Luray, Republican candidate for the State Senate from the 23rd Senatorial District.

Miss Edna Bayne of Wood ville was crowned queen of the Sperryville Firemen’s Carnival. The Rappahannock County Lions Club had the prize winning float featuring the Lions program on sight conservation in
