Allen, a Rappahannock County resident for the past eight years, maintained that the county has had a long term need for something like a theater.
“It’s difficult to find real entertainment in Rappahannock," he said, adding that people had gotten into the habit of driving to Culpeper or Front Royal.
He noted that he was still very suspicious about the economic feasibility of operating a movie house in Washington. “I may end up with egg on my face but there’s no way to know without trying it.”
Allen told the council his plans call for a refurbished lobby with ”a pleasant little snack bar” for the theater which will initially show features on Saturday and Sunday nights. If successful, first expansion will be a children’s matinee on Saturdays and maybe Sundays and second will come cinema classics on Wednesday nights for “real movie buffs.”
As features. Allen won’t show first run films. “We’ll be a second feature theater showing primarily popular movies which were first run three to five years ago that people out here probably haven’t seen yet,” Allen said. “I have no intention of running porno movies,” he emphasized.
