Dr. Christopher Bailey. Warrenton veterinarian who checked the animals for Fox, described the mother as emaciated with very little milk and the puppies as anemic. “The mother weighed 22 pounds. With her frame, she should have weighed approximately twice that." he said, adding that the dog suffered from extreme infestation of hook worms and moderate infestation of whip worms while the pups had hook and round worms in excess.
He stated that all six animals were “in a state of malnutrition caused by parasites and-or lack of food." adding that fecal material from the animals contained mostly dirt "and not a great amount of food.”
Bailey told the judge that generally. puppies are w ormed at eight weeks of age with some breeders starting worm treatment at four weeks "to protect the health of the dog.”
Returning to the stand. Fox said she took the five puppies and the mother to the SPCA shelter after they'd been wormed and treated by the vet. One puppy died during the night, she said, adding that the remaining four pups and the mother were responding to treatment and doing well.
