Our last stop "was a silk factory and retail outlet. Varanasi is. I believe, the foremost center in India, and one of the greatest in the world, for silk spinning and weaving. We were shown a dazzling array of bolts of silk and finished articles—scarves, shawls, dresses and forty-foot saris— in rainbow colors shot through with gold and silver threads. The buying fever took hold of us again, and we two were able to accumulate a few more gifts for Europe . d America.
At. a couple of hours’ rest in our room, we strolled over to another elegant hotel, just a few hundred yards away. Clark’s Hotel welcomed us, in now familiar style, to drinks and dinner on the flower-bordered lawn. Our hosts were gracious and their hospitality matching. I he only flaw in an otherwise perfect evening was the minute but lively mosquitoes or gnats that laid wait for us in the grass. I am not particularly susceptible to such pests but my wife is. Naturally, we had left our insect-repellants behind in our room with the rest of our extensive but unused medicine chest. So again, with great reluctance, we excused ourselves and retired.
