The Maharajah would greet us with the traditional gesture of welcome: hands together before he chest, a slight bow of the head and the one word “Namaste!” We should respond in kind. We did so and introduced ourselves one by one or two by two.
Our host then led us out on to a terrace overlooking the river and chatted with us a while about local problems such as air and water pollution. Asked if he minded picture-taking, he said not at all and cheerfulling posed alone for every camera in the group and then again with most of us in ones and twos. Finally, we took our leave and retired to our bus.
