important events in the life of the Compassionate Buddha. Sarnath is where he is believed to have preached his first sermon to his earliest disciples. The grounds surrounding the site of the former monastery are beautifully laid out and meticulously kept, but the excavated ruins are for archeologists, not tourists. The only building more than three or four feet high is a massive stupa or round tower. But the museum of Buddhist art is magnificent.
The most conspicuous exhibit is a virtually undamaged example of a column-capital ascribed to the Emperor Ashoka who, in the third century B.C., effectively unified India for the first time. The top of the capital is formed by four lions seated on their haunches, back to back and facing outwards. Since independence, the Ashoka column has become a national symbol. From Sarnath, the bus carried us back for another excellent lunch at the Varanasi Hotel and on to the airport for our plane to Khajuraho. Traffic on the road was formidable. As we crossed the Varuna, one of the two rivers from which the city got its new name, we had time to note that it was filled from bank to bank with water hyacinth, a familiar pest in the southern United States.
