Douglas G. Nichols, of Flint Hill, is among some 400 members of the new cadet class at Virginia Military Institute. Lexington, which last week began its 142nd academic year. He is a graduate of Rappahannock County High School.

The new cadets—officially designated fourth classmen, but popularly known as "rats”—are members of VMl's class of 1984 and spent their first days in orientation. drawing uniforms and equipment, learning the basics of military drill, and generally becoming acquainted with cadet life at the Institute.
