Died Of Malnutrition
Dr. Jerry Wilson, regional veterinary superintendent for the Virginia Department of Agriculture. said he’d examined the dead puppy and found the carcass thin, the blood pale and watery and heart, kidneys and mucous membranes pale. He also found numerous round worms and an excessive number of hook worm and round worm eggs. He attributed the puppy’s cause of death to anemia and malnutrition “precipitated by a heavy parasite load and secondary bacterial infection”. In response to questions from Deborah Gray. Dr. Wilson described hook worms as blood suckers that puppies can be infected with before birth. He added that pale gums in a puppy are an easily detectable indication that the dog has hook worms.
