Preliminary counts released by the U. S. Census Bureau show Rappahannock's population has increased by 12.3 per cent in the last decade. Census tallies put the current population here at 5,836 compared to 5,199 in 1970.

The number of housing units in the county has jumped at an even faster rate than population, from 2,024 in 1970 to 2.697 in 1980. an increase of 33.3 per cent. The number of unoccupied houses in Rappahannock stands at 554, a vacancy rate of 21.2 per cent, according to the preliminary census report.
