our otherwise admirable local guide and was half afraid of getting lost in the crowd. On the way down, my problem was different. I longed to stop and gape at the bewildering variety of goods offered in the shops—grains and vegetables of all kinds, textiles, pots and pans, toys and dolls, scents and essences, paints and powders.
Our party stopped to explore one shop that was little wider outside than its neighbors but surprisingly deep within. Its opulence was even more surprising. I have a dim recollection of silver in abundance, but what stays with me is carved ivory of great beauty and variety. The pieces I coveted were of course well beyond my purse.
