“But all over the state of Virginia, they’re saying we have to get the taxes off real estate and here we are putting it on real estate—it’s all we have left (if personal property is dropped),” Luke replied. “We’re getting to the point where we’re going to tax people out of their houses.”
Wood disagreed that doing away with personal property taxes on household goods, farm machinery and livestock would shift the tax burden to real estate. He noted that the commissioner of revenue’s figures showed that lost revenue could be made up from taxes on licensed vehicles. Wood added that only a small percentage of persotxal property in the county is paid on now.
Luke argued that the proposed change will increase the tax burden on “fixed income families with two cars.”
