Vti June, the county's unemployment rate was 7.7 per cent, in July 7.1 per cent and in August 7.3 per cent.

According to Rappahannock’s supervisor of social services Elizabeth Buntin, the increase in unemployment has bearing on applications for welfare programs. “We have seen a considerable increase in food stamp applications here,” said Mrs. Buntin. “I attribute it directly to the state of the economy. Rappahannock has a lot of poor people and they’re the first to feel the pinch of a recession.” She added that food stamp applications were up across the entire state, not just in the county.
