New research findings from the National Education Association (NEA) show that Virginia teachers’ salaries are rapidly losing ground to those in other states.
—Ten years and five years ago, Virginia teachers’ average salaries ranked 25th in the nation. Last year Virginia’s average salary ranked 32nd in the nation.
—Over the past ten years, all but five states in the nation have advanced teachers' salaries at a greater rate than Virginia. The salary increases for Virginia teac*" 'rs have been exceeded by >oe rate of increase in all 12 Southern states except one.
—The 1979-80 average salary increase for Virginia teachers was 5.55 percent (41st nationally) when the consumer price index rose 14.83 percent.
—For the current school year the average starting salary of teachers in Tennessee is SI 1,102; in West Virginia it is S10.944; in North Carolina the minimum starting salary is SI2,390. Virginia’s average starting salary is $10,559.
