According to preliminary figures for September released by the Virginia Employment Commission's Manpower Research Unit, Rappahannock has the highest unemployment rate in the five county Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District Commission.
VEC set unemployment here at 8.6 per cent with 210 unemployed out of a labor force of 2,455. By comparison, Culpeper and Orange have a rate of 5.5 per cent, Madison 5.1 per cent and Fauquier 4.2 per cent.
The national unemployment rate for September was 7.1 per cent compared to 7.5 per cent for August. The state unemployment rate remained exactly the same in Virginia between mid-August and mid-September at 136,200 or 5.4 per cent of the labor force. While the national rate has dropped and the state unemployment rate has remained static, the percentage of out-of-work in Rappahannock has increased over the past several months.
