Africohurr Weather this fall in Rappahannock has lacked only one ingredient to make it absolutely perfect. Rain. We just don’t seem to be able to get enough gentle, soaking rain to saturate the soil. Even the soil surface stays so dry and hard, it is practically impossible to pull an accurate soil sample. Kinzy Buracker, the goodnatured young man who takes soil samples for the Rappahannock Farmers Cooperative, told me that in order to get soil samples at Col. Evan McNear’s farm, he had to take a hammer to drive, the soil tube into the ground. What I am leading into is to pull those samples as soon as practical. Make enough random samples in each field to reflect adequately its needs. Then mix the soil thoroughly. If you do a conscientious job of sampling, the soil analysis results will give you reasonably accurate recommendations upon which to base your fertilizer and lime program.
Decide which fields are going to give you the most return on your lime and fertilizer investment. Then, where practical, get your lime and fertilizer on this fall and early winter.
There are many advantages. You call the shots, have time to bargain and often get a discount in prices. There is less soil compaction and nutrients are available when the plants need them next spring.
Most of our perennial forage crops, such as alfalfa, red clover, clover-grass hays or pasture should be fertilized now. Applications of phosphorus and potassium this fall will help maintain stands through the winter and insure an adequate supply of these nutrients for early growth next spring.
