"Untortunateiy, discussions of a $10,000 minimum salary are woefully inadequate when compared to these facts,” said Walt Mika, Virginia Education Association (VEA) president. “The facts clearly show why a wide spectrum of state officials have recently called for teacher salary increases. 1 am very glad they have raised their voices collectively, and, in light of these most recent statistics, I urge them to raise their sights considerably.
“The critical state of teachers’ salaries is of immediate and long-range concern,” Mika said. “Failure to even approach cost-of-living increases is making a mockery of teachers’ efforts to pay for basic necessities. We also need immediate relief to stem the flow of excellent teachers who are being forced by circumstances—and against their own wishes—to consider leaving a personally satisfying but Financially untenable profession.
